Policy for Involving Unnamed Undergraduate Students on Protocols
Unnamed undergraduate students may work on a project covered by a protocol, under direct supervision of a person listed on that protocol. All undergraduate students will be given a presentation on proper animal-care, prior to being allowed to handle animals, given by either a faculty member or an OARS representative (veterinarian or Animal Care Manager). If this is not possible they will be required to take the IACUC General Training Session. In addition, the students will be given hands-on animal handling sessions with trained personnel from the laboratory involved with the protocol.
Points to be covered in the training session should include:
- Rationale for using animals in research
- Ethical Considerations
- Validity and choice of species
- Dos and don'ts of handling animals
- Lab safety
- Occupational Health & Safety - allergies
- Important resources and contact numbers
